Cyan Worlds will always have a special place in my heart. Most current nerds from my generation remember Myst, and the series of sequels that followed it. With early hints of steampunk style, daring world creation, and intelligent challenges it was and will always be an inspiration to my creative works.
Seriously, who comes up with water that can defy gravity when heated and a base 5 number system written in a unique language?
Embedded in the creative works were always wistful touches of Victorian style, and nods to the real sciences of biology and physics. As much as I love the games themselves the concept art that birthed them is equally inspiring, and worth hunting the internet for.
Sadly, the gaming market favors fast paced action and level grinding over intelligence and creativity and the Myst saga has languished. I blame Blizzard, despite also liking their worlds very much, although, I suppose it’s not their fault they came up with an equally beautiful MMORPG with an added worse than nicotine addiction factor, so close in time Cyan’s. I haven’t been able to do proper research on where Cyan Worlds is now, (cursed employer site blocker) but I hear rumors that their MMORPG lives on, supported by devoted enthusiasts, and that many of their games have made comebacks on the new breed of tablet and mobile platforms.
Regardless, here’s to Cyan Worlds and the Myst saga for inspiring so many of the worlds through which I wander in my dreams.
